Note to my future self..
Today I was listening to an an interview w/ Joe Gebbia (co-founder of Airbnb) and there’s a very interesting takeaway that I got from it regarding how we should think about rejection. Gebbia suggests that:
We should see rejection as an opportunity to move on. Every time you get a rejection turn it into an invitation to keep trying.
Gebbia even talks about this funny “formula” for overcoming rejection:
$$sw^2 + wc = mo$$
The formula stands for “some will care, some won’t” + “who cares” = “move on”. The whole point his argument is that moving on is your only option after being rejected and that will inevitably happen so you might as well get use to it if you want to succeed.
There’s nothing particularly new about what Joe said in this interview but reframing rejection as an invitation to keep trying is very powerful and it will definitely come in handy as I try to tackle bigger and bigger challenges (:
