Occam’s Razor

Note to future self…

This is a mental note on an important concept based on its actual meaning and not the popular interpretation.

Occam’s Razor is a problem-solving principle that states that”entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily”.

According to Wikipedia Occam’s Razor ” is sometimes misrepresented in pop culture and other media by some form of the statement ‘The simplest solution is most likely the right one.’ This is not a form of Occam’s razor but instead is known as the law of parsimony or the law of simplicity.

Occam’s Razor instead is saying that when presented with competing hypotheses that make the same predictions, one should select the solution with the fewest assumptions and is not meant to filter out hypotheses that make different predictions.”

Takeaway

Whenever making a decision it’s important to identify the assumptions that underly our decision and whenever possible we should minimize our the number of assumptions that we make. Assumptions increase the level of noise and make the process of making good decisions a lot harder(:
