Misalignment between actions and expectations

Note to future self…

Ok so while thinking a little bit about why I tend to feel let down when things don’t work in my company I’ve come to realize that there’s a fundamental misalignment between my actions (pursuing a noble and sexy idea) and my expectations (a product that makes a ton of money).

On the one hand, I come up with all these really cool ideas that can change the world and sound super sexy but on the other hand, I have these expectations that these ideas will generate a ton of money (pretty much day one). These two things are not mutually exclusive. You can have a really noble mission/sexy idea that also happens to make a lot of money (or at least revenue). For example, look at Tesla or SpaceX.

Nevertheless, it’s important to be clear about what you want and make sure that your expectations correspond to your actions.

Right now our main focus is to build a really meaningful business where we can solve an important problem for our costumers. This will probably be b2b play although it doesn’t have to. That’s really it. If we can do that, we will be happy. I think that we’ve worried too much about feeding our egos by trying to work on something sexy that could potentially change the world ahem consumer. Ok that’s it. Future actions and expectations are now aligned(:

Now back to work…
