If you know it’s going to work then it isn’t an experiment

Note to future self…

Today I came across this great quote from Jeff Bezos that I heard him say at an interview:

If you know it’s going to work then it isn’t an experiment

I tend to write a lot about my little personal experiments but I haven’t really talked about what makes a good experiment. I think that this is a good heuristic to consider every time I am starting a new experiment whether it’s a personal one or one for my company.

It’s such a simple statement but it goes back to the essence of the scientific principle. The point of the scientific method was to develop a systematic way to discover NEW things. It’s ok if most things don’t work. That’s is actually the point. You don’t put up more points on the scoreboard for every time you’re right. You put up points for every time you’re right doing something that no one else has done before.

Now back to work…
