Today I heard a couple of analyst’s on Bloomberg talking about how Elon Musk’s philosophy around setting goals allowed Tesla to become the biggest automaker by revenue in Q3 2018. The analysts argue that Elon sets ultra-ambitious goals that the company and it’s employees are unlikely to meet but in the process having such a high bar for success pushes them to accomplish extraordinary things.
I think that there’s a popular saying that also captures this philosophy and it says:
“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
I really like this way of thinking about setting goals for yourself and your team because it pushes you to become the best version of yourself.
Important to remember
I will say that there’s obviously the downside of pushing yourself so much to the point where you’re constantly stressed by your goals or you simply start to ignore them because you know you won’t be able to accomplish them. As with everything else in life, the key is to find the right balance (:
