Calories for the Mind

Note to my future self..

As I look back on 2018 I think that one of the biggest lessons that I learned is that the quality of the content you consume really shapes your psyche and your behavior. This is quite obvious but this is the first year where really internalized it.

For the first time in my life I started reading several books per month as I know had more time (no more college!). I realized how reading books across genres (psychology, history, business, etc.) just sends my brain into overdrive and the connections that I am starting to make with so little relative effort is crazy!

This year I also started consuming podcasts on entrepreneurship and it made me realize that there are different types of content that I can consume at different times and that they can serve different purposes (without affecting retention).

Finally this year I started to reduce or eliminate my usage of Facebook, Instagram and low-quality YouTube videos. I still have some work to do in this space in 2019 but the difference is already palpable. In 2018 I substituted FB, Insta, Snap for Twitter as my primary social platform and dose of escapism. It was probably one of the top 20 decisions that I made in 2018 given the amount that I’ve learned and the conversations that I’ve had on the platform. I even wrote about it. I think that my generation severely underestimates Twitter.

In any case, in 2019 I want to double down on my effort to consume high quality content. The main tactics to achieve this include:

  1. Reading books that are more challenging
  2. Reading longer form pieces
  3. Having a queue of high quality content that I can consume depending on my mood.

That’s it for now(:

Now back to work..
